One of the first things that President Donald Trump did upon assuming office was to sign an executive order ending all DEI programs within the federal government.
This directly undid something that President Joe Biden put into place on his first day in office. All the way back on Jan. 20 of 2021, one of Biden’s first actions was to sign an executive order titled “Advancing Racial Equity and Support for Underserved Communities Through the Federal Government.”
It was followed in February 2023 by another executive order called “Further Advancing Racial Equity and Support for Underserved Communities Through the Federal Government.”
These directives ordered the entirety of the executive branch of government to set up DEI goals and initiatives.
What this meant in practice is that every agency throughout the federal government had to submit something known as an “Equity Action Plan.” These plans detailed how the agency was going to further DEI objectives—usually, by setting up quotas, setting up DEI offices, and hiring DEI “experts.”
And so, government agencies ranging from airline safety, to the military, to nuclear waste management, all set up DEI practices.
And of course, this was actually mirroring what was already happening across large swathes of corporate America.
