The Ukraine–Russia war has undeniably taught us something new about modern warfare. It taught us that the advent of drones (and drone technologies) has significantly changed how two forces engage in battle on the ground.
Over the past two years, you’ve likely come across quite a few first-person-perspective videos of Ukrainian drones killing Russian soldiers. There are hundreds of these videos online—there’s even a subreddit devoted almost entirely to them.
These videos depict several different types of drones. Some drones fly up very high in the air before dropping grenades on enemy soldiers at ground level.
Other drones are like kamikazes—they find the enemy combatants, fly directly at them, self-destruct as they explode, and usually kill anyone within a 5-to-10-foot radius.
Regardless of the type, these drones are vicious—they have completely changed the ground game. People like to compare the Ukraine–Russia war to the trench warfare of World War I, but in reality, these drones have made it completely different. The drones are cheap.
They’re hard to hit. They can be controlled from miles away. They’re ultra-precise. And as soon as one of them is used up or destroyed, it’s automatically replaced by another drone that can be fielded within minutes.
It’s truly an asymmetric, game-changing technology.
As a response, the Russians have begun drilling their soldiers on anti-drone tactics, as well as developing jamming software to make the drones unusable. But it’s a high-tempo arms race, and for every signal-jamming piece of technology on the Russian side, the Ukrainians are figuring out a workaround—including through sheer volume.
For example, Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskyy recently said that Ukraine can now produce 4 million drones a year.
Amidst all this, you can be absolutely certain that the military research departments of every major country are paying close attention to what’s happening in Ukraine.
